- What is Podcasting? Podcasting is a somewhat automatic and efficient way to deliver and receive content via the internet. It is most often used to deliver news articles or other perodically published print or media via the web. more detail Note: you don't need an Ipod, you can use any mp3 player or just play 'em back on your PC. - Do I need to have an Apple iPOD? NO. The audio and video files can be played on any computer. The audio files can also be played on any portable mp3 palyer. There are two ways to play the meida, (1) Stream It or (2) Download and Play it. Streaming is nice because the playback will start right away. To stream our media content you will have to download and install RealPlayer. You can also download the files to play when your not connected to the internet, or to load onto a portable player. To play these downloaded files, most any player will do such as Windows Media Player, RealPlayer or Apples's QuickTime. The video downloads are in Apple's m4v format for the new video ipods and are best played on the computer using QuickTime which is incorporated into iTunes and available free from www.apple.com.
- Using an On-Line Podcasting Service We are members of BluBrry.com. Go to this site and search for First Presbyterian or just click on "religion" and you will find our podcasts. Blubrry has a nice built in playback system, no downloads or installs needed to enjoy our content. You can even become a member at BluBrry and have them manage and pull to gether all of your podcasts.
- Why would I want to use it? Podcast listeners/watchers (i.e. you) can also run a program called an aggregator. This program will collect articles, files, audio files, videos, etc from various "channels" that you set up. Aggregators also will search for articles pertaining to a particular subject of interest and present them for perusal. Here at FPC we have set up two podcasts, one for the audio sermon recordings and another for the video recordings. If you include either of these podcast channels in your aggregator, it will check for new sermons periodically and present these for listening or viewing. Most aggregators can even be set up to automatically download media files and even transfer them to your mp3 player automatically.
-
Where can I get a podcast aggregator? For Windows, many people like FeedDemon by Bradbury Software, and for Apple, NetNewsWire by Ranchero Software is probably the most popular. There are many alternatives out there, both free and commerical, which you can find using any search engine. I use FeedDemon @ $29.95 (but they have a free demo).
- How do I set up my aggregator to get the FPC podcast? After installing your aggregator software, set up one of the channels with one of our RSS feeds (RSS stands for Real Simple Syndication) and it will download the new recordings as they become available. Just "right click" on this
for audio, or this one for video, then click on "copy shortcut", then open FeedDemon and add a new channel by hlding the Cntrl key down while pressing the "N" key.
- How do I add the FPC podcast to my iTunes? Make sure you have the latest version of iTunes. Click on "Podcast" under the "Source" column at the left of the screen. Then at the very top of the window, click on "Advanced" and then "Subscribe to new podcast". This will open a small window. Come back to this page and right click on
, then click on "copy shortcut", then paste it into the small iTunes window for a new subscription. If you have one of the new IPOD-Video players use the feed. Note: these are much larger files.
- Can I Just Download the File Myself? Yes, you can download the recording files and save them on your hard drive and then play them or move them to your playback library or whatever. To do this, go to List all our podcasts , and "right click" on the [download] linke for the file you want. Then choose "Save Target As.." and indicate where you would like to store the file. The file will then download itself to the destination on your hard drive that you have indicated. From here you can import it into your "library" or transfer it to your portable playback device, or whatever.
- Where can I get some help? As always, contact the webservant with questions, you will receive help promptly.
