Neighborhood: Nestled in the rolling hills of rural Sussex County is Sparta, NJ. Residences are spread out over a wide geographic area which abounds in beautiful lakes, ponds and streams. Within Sparta's boundaries lies the largest manmade lake in New Jersey, Lake Mohawk. Created in 1926 by damming up the headwaters of the Wallkill River, the lake provides numerous opportunities for pleasure to water sports enthusiasts and hammock relaxers alike. While many of the lake homes were built as summer hideaway cottages and exhibit a log cabin or chalet-style theme, no two are alike. Most have since been modernized and converted to year-round use. Today the 2600 families who reside within the ·" reservation" (Lake Mohawk property and homeowners who support the maintenance of the lake and accouterments) comprise a vibrant core of Sparta's municipal life.
